Positive
Southwark Playhouse
Produced by Visual Sauce.
POSITIVE is a two-hander about Black, gay masculinity and HIV+ status, told through the relationship between two
Black, gay best friends.
Recently single Malachi is hellbent on exploring his sexuality in any way he sees fit, whilst Ade is navigating
life after recently finding out he is HIV positive.
Engagement Programme Delivered:
In response to the run of ‘Positive’, we created a paid position for 1 Trainee Assistant Director and 1
Response
Play Director to join the process. We then hired 6 paid shadow directors to join the process to demystify
the
rehearsal process.
We then ran 3 open call writing workshops for over 60 Black Queer writers, led by Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu,
Somebody
Jones and Rikki Beadle-Blair MBE where we identified our commissioned writers.
Via an open call submission, we commissioned and staged 4 Response Plays to ‘Positive’. These plays were
directed by both our Trainee AD and our Response Play director, using 4 paid, professional actors.
Overall, we developed over 100 emerging creatives through this engagement process.
