Grey Castle Productions design and delivers bespoke engagement programmes around new writing, be that during an
R&D, production or touring.
From paid trainee placements and writer commissions to workshops, open rehearsals and post-show events, each
programme is built to strengthen the production itself, developing new artists, identifying new audiences,
increasing ticket sales and creating meaningful activity around the work.
Programmes can be created from scratch, built into Arts Council England applications, or developed around an
existing funded or commercial project.
Paid Trainee Assistant Director, Trainee Assistant Producer and Shadow Director placements create
practical pathways for emerging creatives to gain experience within professional rehearsal and
production processes.
Placements are structured and mentored, with participants supported to move beyond observation and take
on meaningful responsibilities within the rehearsal room or wider production.
We programme practical workshops for emerging artists across writing, directing, producing and
theatre-making, led by established industry practitioners.
Previous facilitators include Rikki Beadle-Blair MBE, Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu and Somebody Jones.
Workshops can operate as standalone opportunities or form the first stage of a wider development pathway
into paid placements, commissions or other opportunities.
We create paid response-play programmes in which emerging writers develop short work inspired by the
themes or world of a production.
Writers can receive dramaturgical support, collaborate with directors and see their work rehearsed and
performed alongside the wider production.
These programmes can also create progression opportunities for Trainee Assistant Directors, giving them
responsibility for directing new work with professional or emerging actors.
We develop short-form audio drama and digital programmes combining workshops, mentoring and paid
commissions.
Working with recording studios and audio practitioners, emerging writers can develop new work from
initial idea through to recording and sharing, creating another route into professional creative
practice beyond the stage.
We develop events around productions that create further opportunities for audiences and artists to meet
and engage with the work.
These can include artist and specialist Q&As, facilitated conversations, workshops, queer nightlife
events, focus groups and more, all tailored to the production and its audiences.
Bring us onto a project early and he can build the entire engagement strand around it.
This can include:
From a single workshop or placement to a programme running throughout an entire production, activity is shaped around the work, its audiences and the artists it has the potential to support.
